"I never would've left unless I felt I'd been slammed up against a wall."—Soap Opera Digest, 5/27/03, on returning to OLTL after a three-year absence Soap Opera Digest/Weekly Online
"[One exec] once told me not to say that I wasn't working next week because then the fans wouldn't watch. I said, 'If you're afraid the fans won't watch if they know I'm not working, then how 'bout putting me to work?'" —Digest, 1/2/01 Soap Opera Digest/Weekly Online
"I like when Dorian takes on the giants and doesn't get down with the ants or the aunts. I don't want to be Auntie Dorian. I think that I should be somebody that even my nieces know they better not mess with!"—Digest, 4/29/97 Soap Opera Digest/Weekly Online
"I have a weakness for very tall men. And if they have a sense of humor, the stakes get even higher."—Digest, 3/12/96 Soap Opera Digest/Weekly Online
DIGEST ONLINE: What would you like to see in terms of future storyline?
SLEZAK: I have no idea. I try very hard to stay away from it, because if I get my heart set on something and they don't do it, then you're always a little disappointed, or you say, "Well, I don't really want to play this story they've written for me. I want to play the story that I thought up."
So I have never, ever tried to put my ideas forth. The only time that we did that, Robin [Strasser] came to me [years ago] and said, "Don't you think we should finally resolve this [conflict] and play out their thing?" And I said, "That's a brilliant idea."
We took it upstairs to [then producer] Linda [Gottlieb], because we figured she was new on the show and she didn't really know all the back history. She said, "Oh, this is fascinating," and shelved it immediately because she didn't want to do that story. Then when she left, Susie [Bedsow-Horgan] said, "You know what? That's a great idea." And it was Robin's idea, not mine. [Susie] said, "Let's do it." And they still haven't played it out completely, not as completely as Robin had initially suggested. I've thought, you've seen it all from Viki's perspective, you haven't seen any from Dorian's. And that's what they have to play, but I don't know that they're going to do it. That sense of effortlessness is evident in play between Mel and Dorian. "Robin flies without a parachute," says an admiring Markle. SOW, Stephen Markle
